Fighting a war in Afghanistan is like owing a boat.  It is said owning a boat is like throwing money down a rat hole and yet it keeps  sinking.  Obama tonight has committed up to 30, 000 more troops the soonest will arrive at the end of December, and of  course they have a new mission.  We are going to secure the big cities and stand up a government that supplies services to the people.  (I hate to tell him they already have one, it’s called Taliban.) We are in our ninth year there and we have steadily lost ground , till today we control like 13% of the country (Kabul) and not much else.   Even our ambassador to Afghanistan advised the President not to send any more troops and the government was so corrupt it would do no good.  The present government is the drug trade and it’s seems like a big circle to me, the money flows to a few at the top, they throw the money at the tribal leaders, who dish it out to growers and fighters to continue the cause.

So let me see if I got this straight.  The President is sending 30,000 new troops (nobody has said how many additional contractors this will add)  to be there within 6 months.  The goal to stand up , train and equip the Afghan army and police force to take over all responsibilities by the end of 2013 when our troops will be withdrawn.  Sounds like a fine plan to me! With the following exceptions:

  1. The government is so corrupt that it can not be stood up.
  2. The Afgan fighters be they army or police are not a match for the Taliban and have no heart in the fight.
  3. The Taliban control 87% of the country after our 8 year effort.
  4. Following the advise of Generals has been  the causes of  disastrous failures.  Generals have never seen a war they don’t love and can’t win.  No proof they can win of late.
  5. Generals and Sec. of Defence prevented the capture of Bin Laden at Tora Bora by turning down the request for more troop to keep Bin Laden from escaping.  They didn’t provide the troops in fear of pissing off the Afghan people and Bin Laden escaped. We haven’t spent a lot of time worrying about pissing off the people, instead we send no conscious drones to blow them up.
  6. (quote from Global Research)

The United States Empire is following a long line of empires and conquerors that have met their end in Afghanistan. The Median and Persian Empires, Alexander the Great, the Seleucids, the Indo-Greeks, Turks, Mongols, British and Soviets all met the end of their ambitions in Afghanistan.

And today, the US Empire is on the fast track of its demise. A recent article by Tom Englehardt provides us more key indicators of this:

  • In 2002 there were 5,200 US soldiers in Afghanistan. By December of this year, there will be 68,000.
  • Compared to the same period in 2008, Taliban attacks on coalition forces using Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) has risen 114 percent.
  • Compared to the same period in 2008, coalition deaths from IED attacks have increased sixfold.
  • Overall Taliban attacks on coalition forces in the first five months of 2009, compared to the same period last year, have increased 59 percent.
  • Genghis Khan could not hold onto Afghanistan.

Neither will the United States, particularly when in its desperation to continue its illegal occupation, it tosses aside international law, along with its own Constitution.

    7. We all know we are in deep financial trouble and yet we send more troops to a sure failure.  We have spent trillion on Iraq and Afghanistan with much more to come.  The money doesn’t matter to me , in fact I hope it’s such a drain we can no longer afford this nonsense and are forced to withdraw.  Yeah I can hear you right wingers and other war mongers scream “A defeat will destroy our country”  my reply ” TOO LATE ASSHOLES YOU HAVE ALREADY DONE IT”.

    8.  We reinvent the goals of the war every year of so till now nobody really knows why we are there.  Bin Laden and the boys are long gone and scattered throughout the world and have conducted serious attacks in other countries and are most likely stronger than before.

    9. We are essentially fighting this war alone.  Some allies are sending token amounts of additional troops (England 500)    and others are saying Thanks, but NO Thanks.

    10.  The opposition pays their fighters $5/mo and have unlimited volunteers, both religious and hungry (they have high unemployment too)

    11.  There is an old saying in war that a large amount of cheap weapons can defeat the most expensive weapons of the opposition. (the Taliban proved this against the Russians )  There is an exception to this rule I’m afraid it’s called a nuclear weapon.  If Pakistan ends up not on our side they have them too.  Our generals are just itching to drop the big one and all that’s keeping them from doing it is that our troops are on the ground there.  Oh wait I just made a point for keeping our troops there.

    12.  “HE HAD A DREAM” The troops will be out of Afghanistan by 2013.  Would you like to bet on that and if it’s true let’s DECLARE VICTORY AND BRING THEM HOME NOW.
