YOU WOULD NEVER THINK YOU’D SEE

A NEGATIVE NUCLEAR POWER STORY ON THE TIGER.  SURPRISE HERE IT IS.

Pierre Tristan brings the usal anti nuke story back once again for another run at bending the truth.  They pick and choose parts of the story that best fit their theme of backing an impossibe dream and therefore dooming us to a trip in the dark. Alternate energy cannot and will not be the sole source for the future grid.  No technology existing today can provide constant reliable power when you need it.  You can run your computer models that say if you build x number of these, and Y number of these you can do it, but can you depend on the wind blowing tomorrow or the sun shinning next week, Nope sorry, but you can depend on a nuke plant being on line some pulling off breaker to breaker operations for years running and all have an on line time in the 90 percent range.  The author uses ” THE DECEPTIONS OF MANIPULATED  NUMBERS, THE FALSE PROMISES AND SHEER SWINDLE OF TAXPAYER DOLLARS FOR A TECHNOLOGY WITH A LETHAL PAST AND AN UNPROVEN FUTURE”  .  I would suggest that the pot not call the kettle black here.  Unproven , what do you call 441 plants worldwide , operating since the late 50’s with just one bad accident Chernobyl.  We had Three Mile Island plant melt down but did not breach containment.  No one died.  It also proved the theory taught me in nuke school that no matter how bad you screwed up a PWR you would not breach containment.  Point made.

SO HERE’S A ITEM BY ITEM REBUTTAL OF THE POINTS MADE IN THIS STORY.

  1. Nuclear plants can’t be built fast enough to meet demand.  Check out the size of the alternate energy sources needed for just California in my previous post.  Raw materials for alternate energy sources are limited and so are some things for nukes.  The sheer size of the renewable problem makes resources even more difficult than nukes.  By selecting a already NRC apporved design (ABWR for example) you  can build a plant in 5 years.
  2. Cost overruns.  Show me any project of size that comes in on time and on budget now days and you would have the exception instead of the rule.
  3. French consumption as an example of why conservation and efficiency can’t do the job here because we are energy hogs.  The French consume just 600 KWH a month and we on average consume 1050KWH per month, what he doesn’t tell you is that Californians consume just 750 KWH per month, we are close and the rest could get there too, and will as the price rises.  He doesn’t tell you that 3000 French died in 03 from a heat wave because they don’t have A/C.
  4. Betting on demand increase. He thinks energy use will increase by 22% in the next 20 years because it always has.  Once again he leave out CA numbers which have been flat for years.
  5. Nukes are too expensive: He sights costs for his pets at 6 million per megawatt and some wind projects at 1 to 2 millions per megawatt and  and costs of 8 million per megawatt for nuke plants.  This is like comparing apples and oranges, what is it worth to have a hot grid 24/7 is priceless.
  6. The Ole Terrorist threat:  If our security is that lax still then we have been wasting a lot of money for no gain.  The possibility of a terrorist actually inflicting damage on a nuke plant is pretty low and maybe even impossible.  I refuse to gamble a sure catastrophe  on a highly improbable event.

The odds of a catastrophe are 100:1 he claims, probably the same computers that figured the Wall Street successes were used.  The odds of a huge die off of people is 1:1, do you like them odds.
His closing statement is totally ridiculous “If nuclear power can make it on it’s own then , fine. But it’s far too dangerous, too uncertain, too costly, and too tempting to terrorists.  So let’s see if I got it right, my interpretation of his closing statement is : Nukes are fine as long as he doesn’t have to pay for any  of them.  Sounds pretty much like a scared ass American who doesn’t want to pay for the commons.

IT’S PRETTY SIMPLE THEIR ALTERNATE ENERGY PLAN WILL GUARANTEE THAT YOU WILL BE IN THE DARK IN THE NOT TOO DISTANT FUTURE.  WHERE ARE MY WIRE CUTTERS  I’LL MAKE SURE HE DOESN”T GET ANY OF MY CLEAN OLE NUCLEAR POWER!

Hey! We agree on this. Without termendous electrical capacity candle sales are thru the roof. Somewhere there’s some limp pud who’s screaming bloody hell! Thing is these types are the usual, “hard headed”.
The current opposition to the by products of most manufacturing disciplines are why, in my opinion, we find all the work overseas. Attitudes towards mfg growth as much as the greed of cheap overseas labor is equally to blame for our current labor troubles..
